Old flashes burned magnesium powder or filaments by electric or other ignition. Modern flashes use a high-voltage arc in xenon gas.

English Wikipedia has an article about them with the search word "Flash". On the disambiguation page select the link "Flash (photography)".

Thats correct the old-say in early 70's- the flashes were bulbs of one time use- and some times magnesium cubes/ powder was also used.
